A Critical Discourse Analysis of Different News Reports on the Same Event: Illustrated with Examples from <i>China Daily</i> and <i>The Guardian</i>

Since the 1970s, Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) has been widely applied to analysis of news reports. News report, as a kind public discourse, conveys its state’s political position and ideology influences readers’ opinions. The study takes Fairclough’s Three-dimensional Model theoretical framework, analyzing comparing 10 reports from Guardian China Daily (5 samples each) perspectives wording, modality, sources, sociohistorical contexts. Through analysis, attempts illustrate different images constructed in two media newspapers’ attitudes towards Extradition Bill Incident. results show that do differ lot. uses bunch derogatory words describe police, while deliberately filters information glorify criminal actions protesters; it “may” “would” impose groundless speculation on Chinese central government adopts protesters’ remarks for many times. shapes righteous brave image protesters, brutal expressing support protesters. shows efforts police have made peace Hong Kong wrongdoings protesters with substantial behavioral descriptions; “will”, “should” “must” China’s resolution action wind down riots, express strong condemnation what done, building positive responsible police.
